Madrid's coat of arms tells a story—a bear reaching toward a strawberry tree, a symbol rooted in the city's wilder medieval past. That same emblem finds a three-dimensional home at the Puerta de los Osos, the Gate of the Bears, marking the entrance to the historic Vista Alegre Estate in the Carabanchel district. Designed by architect Javier Vellés Montoya in nineteen eighty-seven and sculpted by Juan Cuevas, the gate features two limestone bears perched high above wrought-iron gates and red-brick pillars, seeming poised to leap from their pedestals into the gardens beyond. Atlas Obscura reports the structure was built to commemorate the centenary of Vista Alegre's donation to charitable institutions in eighteen eighty-seven. Today, as the estate houses educational centers, those stone guardians remain one of Madrid's most distinctive tributes to its symbolic past.
