In Astorga, Spain, between two churches sits an architectural rarity: a tiny stone cell where medieval women voluntarily chose lives of extreme isolation. Per Atlas Obscura, these deeply devout women took a so-called Vow of Darkness, choosing to be permanently walled inside this space to dedicate themselves entirely to prayer. From outside, locals and pilgrims traveling the Camino de Santiago would leave food and water on a stone ledge below a barred window—the walled-in woman's only physical link to the world. A Latin inscription carved above those bars delivers a sobering reminder: 'Remember my judgment, for yours will be likewise. Mine yesterday, yours today.' Inside, a second small window allowed her to watch the church altar and participate in Mass from her isolation.
