British writer Henry Oliver discovered pecan pie at a Bethesda, Maryland diner and fell in love. Per Boing Boing, Oliver calls it part of the 'ordinary sublime of American life' and says it 'knocks English apple crumble into a cocked hat.' Writing in The Common Reader, he marveled that Americans have such decadent desserts available every single day.
