Returning to ARC

Paul Christiano, a prominent AI alignment researcher, is returning to the Alignment Research Center as executive director, per AI Alignment Forum. He's stepping back from government advisory work to focus on mechanistic explanations for how neural networks behave—and using those explanations to detect and address misalignment. Christiano estimates that current alignment methods have a twenty to thirty percent chance of failing before AI systems reach broadly superhuman capability, a risk he believes justifies pursuing fundamental research.
