Congressional Black Caucus plays hardball with Jeffries-skeptic DSA Democrats
politics
Axios is reporting that the Congressional Black Caucus may be conditioning membership on support for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as speaker. Three incoming Black Democrats seeking to join—Melat Kiros of Colorado, Darializa Avila Chevalier of New York's thirteenth district, and Chris Rabb from Pennsylvania—have declined to commit to voting for Jeffries. Kiros has said she won't vote for any Democrat in leadership who takes corporate PAC money, which includes Jeffries. Several anonymous CBC members have said candidates who don't support Jeffries won't be welcomed into the caucus. Democratic leadership has countered that caucus membership follows established processes rather than loyalty pledges. The formal outcome will be determined after the November election.
