Progressives prevail in a Michigan House primary that divided moderates — and women’s groups

Will Lawrence, a progressive organizer and co-founder of the climate group Sunrise Movement, won Michigan's seventh Congressional District Democratic primary on Tuesday—defeating two moderate candidates, former U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink and Navy SEAL veteran Matt Maasdam. The race exposed sharp divides within the Democratic Party. Lawrence campaigned on universal healthcare and a federal moratorium on data centers, with endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders. Brink and Maasdam both emphasized national security credentials and electability, The 19th reports. Outside groups spent over eight million dollars on the race. In the final week, Maasdam's camp called for Brink to drop out and consolidate anti-Lawrence votes—a move that infuriated Democratic women's groups. Jessica Mackler, president of EMILY's List, told The 19th it was fundamentally unfair for a man in third place to demand a woman candidate exit the race. The seventh District voted for Trump by just one point in twenty twenty-four, making it a top Democratic target. Lawrence's progressive victory could signal shifting party momentum—though it's also revealed deep tensions that could complicate unity efforts heading into November.
