What BTS’ Grammy boycott tells us about the problem with ‘Asian pop’ as a label

K-pop supergroup BTS has announced they will not submit music for the 2027 Grammy Awards, in response to the Recording Academy's new category for best Asian pop music performance. The Grammys say the category will celebrate recordings featuring Asian languages and what they call the integrated approach of idol production—but BTS says they'd rather see music celebrated for what it is, not divided by region or language. According to The Conversation, the new category highlights a deeper problem: Asian pop actually encompasses wildly different genres, production systems, and regional traditions across Japan, Korea, China, and beyond—so much diversity that lumping them under a single label ends up misrepresenting many of the artists it's meant to honor. The withdrawal raises questions about whether the Recording Academy consulted with the artists and communities affected by how it chose to define the category.
