Peruvian cardinal hails $150m lead poisoning settlement for 1,300 people as a ‘historic milestone’

Per The Guardian, a settlement has been reached in Peru over lead poisoning from a smelter in the Andes operated by the Doe Run Company, a subsidiary of Renco Group. The company will pay one hundred fifty million dollars to thirteen hundred seventy-three Peruvians who suffered health impacts from childhood exposure at the plant. Cardinal Pedro Barreto, eighty-two, led the campaign against the smelter for nearly twenty years despite death threats and harassment, calling the settlement a 'historic milestone.'
