Primed for Malware: Stop Selling Compromised Android Devices

tech

According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, millions of counterfeit Android devices sold on Amazon and other major retailers arrive pre-loaded with malware. These streaming boxes and smart TVs are infected with botnets that hijack home networks to fuel cyberattacks and illegal activity. One major campaign affected ten million devices. The malware hides inside pre-installed apps that don't show up visibly. The EFF says retailers have the resources to stop this but haven't made systemic efforts. The FBI warned consumers this year to avoid cheap streaming devices offering free sports and movies—a common red flag for malware. The EFF urges retailers like Amazon to protect customers and provide clear information to help them stay safe.
