Even The New York Times “isn’t immune” to declining search traffic — one reason it’s leaning into video
business
The New York Times reported slower subscriber growth in its second quarter earnings call this week. It added two hundred eighty thousand digital-only subscribers in the quarter, down from three hundred ten thousand in the first quarter. Nieman Lab reports that CEO Meredith Kopit Levien attributed part of the slowdown to declining search traffic from major tech platforms. The Times is responding with a major video push. It hired eight video journalists in January and is currently hiring for twelve more video-focused positions. The company just launched a new Shows tab in its flagship app, joining a Watch section it introduced last year. Levien called video a 'long-term bet,' though she acknowledged that video advertising has played only a minor role in revenue so far.
