Why truckers always seem to be on the phone while they drive

Long-haul truckers spend weeks isolated in their cabs, and many have turned to an unlikely source of relief: hands-free phone calls. According to CalMatters, some drivers spend more than twenty-seven hours a week talking with family and fellow drivers to combat the mental toll of isolation. While state law prohibits holding a phone while driving, truckers comply by using hands-free headsets. As Lindsey Bryan, a health and wellness manager at a nonprofit serving truck drivers, points out, these workers lack access to many stress-reduction tools others depend on. California has yet to study truck drivers' mental health comprehensively or establish rehabilitation programs for those struggling.
