Two Iranian female footballers granted Australian citizenship after protest

Two Iranian female footballers, Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh, have been granted Australian citizenship, The Guardian reports. The pair sought Australia's protection after refusing to sing Iran's national anthem during the women's Asian Cup in March—a protest that led to them being condemned as traitors at home. Part of a broader group of seven from Iran's delegation who requested protection, both expressed pride at receiving their new citizenship.
