Russia allows import and sale of lower-grade gasoline amid fuel shortage

Meduza reports that Russia's Energy Ministry is allowing the import and sale of lower-grade automotive fuel — including Euro-2, Euro-3, and Euro-4 standards — through July 2027 to address fuel shortages that have lasted more than two months. The shortage stems partly from Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries. These older fuel grades contain far higher levels of sulfur and hazardous impurities than modern Euro-5 gasoline, which Russia banned in 2013. Filling stations will display the fuel class to help drivers choose, and the ministry emphasized the measure is temporary, not a shift in environmental policy.
