Researchers at Caltech have quadrupled the resolution of optical microscopes using quantum entanglement—a phenomenon where pairs of particles are mysteriously linked at a quantum level. The approach, per Caltech News, routes one of the paired photons through the microscope's optics three times instead of once, yielding a fourfold improvement over conventional light microscopes. The breakthrough could transform medical imaging by revealing cellular details like mitochondria and nuclei without requiring dangerously bright light—and improve semiconductor inspection by allowing manufacturers to spot chip defects with unprecedented clarity.
