Extreme heat breaks temperature records in central and eastern Europe

Central and eastern Europe is experiencing extreme temperatures as a heat wave sweeps across the continent. Slovakia just hit forty-two degrees Celsius—one hundred eight degrees Fahrenheit—a new record. Austria and Hungary are also posting record temperatures. The Guardian reports the intense heat has sparked wildfires and droughts across the region, and authorities in Poland have been forced to shut down the Kozienice and Połaniec power plants.
