Skanderbeg Memorial in Lezhë, Albania

Skanderbeg, a fifteenth-century Albanian nobleman, led one of history's longest resistances against Ottoman rule after founding the League of Lezhë in fourteen forty-four. Per Atlas Obscura, his legacy is preserved in Lezhë, where a grand mausoleum now stands over what was once the Church of Saint Nicholas, his original burial site. After Ottoman conquest, his grave was desecrated; centuries later, during the Hoxha dictatorship, the mosque that had replaced the church was demolished. In nineteen eighty-one, the structure was restored and transformed into the monumental memorial that honors the hero of Albanian resistance.
