Elgin Schoolhouse in Caliente, Nevada

other

Per Atlas Obscura, the Elgin Schoolhouse in Caliente, Nevada, opened in nineteen twenty-two as a one-room school serving railroad workers and their families in Meadow Valley Wash. When teachers' quarters were added four years later, the schoolhouse attracted a steady stream of instructors—many of whom, following the custom of the era, left teaching after marrying into the community. The school closed in nineteen sixty-seven once bus service connected remote Caliente to larger towns. Restored in the late nineteen nineties and designated a state historic site in two thousand and five, the schoolhouse now preserves the classroom and artifacts typical of rural Nevada education in the mid-twentieth century.
