AZ-NV-UT Tri-State Monument in Mesquite, Nevada
other
Per Atlas Obscura, the corner where Arizona, Utah, and Nevada meet has had a complicated surveying history. In eighteen seventy, astronomer Isaac P. James used star measurements and solar noon observations to establish the tri-state point—theoretically rigorous, but tremendously difficult with nineteenth-century equipment on horseback. By nineteen hundred, the original survey had drifted nearly one point five miles off course. After a correction in nineteen oh-one, another century passed before surveyors returned in twenty sixteen with sub-centimeter GPS accuracy to install a definitive new monument and move the old one to Utah for preservation.
