German scientists, per Ars Technica, have cracked the recipe for snail slime engineering: collagen and calcium work in tandem to create mucus with properties tailored to specific functions. Snail mucus is mostly water, but glycoproteins and complex carbohydrates give it its viscous texture. The research focused on grove snails, which secrete five distinct types of mucus: a lubricant for movement, an adhesive for sticking to surfaces, and an epiphragm—a calcified layer secreted during hibernation that seals and protects the shell. Beyond shell protection, snail slime has shown real promise in cosmetics for anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties, with researchers exploring drug delivery applications. Earlier studies found that snail slime combined with gold nanoparticles accelerated wound healing in mice. Understanding this collagen-calcium mechanism could unlock new possibilities for both applications.
