The Torment of Saint Anthony in Fort Worth, Texas

According to Atlas Obscura, a painting long credited to Florentine master Domenico Ghirlandaio has finally been attributed to its true artist: a teenage Michelangelo. The work, titled 'The Torment of Saint Anthony' and painted around fourteen eighty-seven when Michelangelo was just twelve or thirteen, draws its composition from a print by Martin Schöngauer but adds Michelangelo's own details—demons rendered with textures he observed at a market. For centuries the work was misidentified as Ghirlandaio's, until an art dealer brought it to the Metropolitan Museum for restoration. Researchers there identified Michelangelo's signature style in the color palette, and infrared imaging revealed corrections made during painting that proved it wasn't merely a copy. The painting is one of only four easel paintings Michelangelo ever completed, and it now resides at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth—the only Michelangelo housed anywhere in the Americas.
