IHC seeks govt reply over withholding tax hike on goods transportation

business

Pakistan's Islamabad High Court is reviewing a challenge to the government's withholding tax on goods transportation. According to Dawn, the federal government increased the rate from six to seven percent, but freight operators argue it's discriminatory: oil tanker contractors face only a two percent tax on identical vehicles hauling petroleum products. The petitioners contend that taxing the same transportation infrastructure differently based on cargo type violates the Constitution's guarantees of equal protection, and say the government provided no economic justification for the hike. The court will take up the case again in mid-September.
