‘Nobody should be forced to return to Haiti’: UN expert warns the island is unfit to receive deportees

The United Nations is warning that Haiti is unfit to receive deportees. El País reports that William O'Neill, the UN's designated human rights expert on Haiti, issued the warning, citing gang violence that has dominated the island since President Jovenel Moïse's assassination in twenty twenty-one. The danger is so severe that even UN envoys with armed escorts and armored vehicles cannot safely operate in Port-au-Prince. O'Neill himself lands in a different city and uses helicopter transport to move around the capital.
