Palau removed invasive rats; a year later, fish biomass rose 183% and leaf nitrogen jumped 80%

Times of India reports that Palau removed invasive rats from Ulong Island in 2024, and the results have been striking. Within a year, fish biomass in nearby waters rose one hundred eighty-three percent, while leaf nitrogen at one reef site increased about eighty percent. The study documented more seabirds returning and increased nutrient flow from land to sea, showing that island restoration can benefit both terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
