In 2001, Denmark began turning 19 km of straightened River Skjern into 26 km of bends

Denmark's River Skjern restoration project has been underway since two thousand one, converting nineteen kilometers of straightened river into twenty-six kilometers of natural bends. Times of India reports that the river now inundates more of its surrounding floodplain, and some aquatic species are returning—but the full ecological diversity of the river's past hasn't recovered. Artificial channels still limit the river's natural dynamics, and researchers say achieving a truly restored ecosystem will likely require further targeted restoration work.
