Lake Nyos killed 1,746 people in 1986 then scientists found more gas

In 1986, Lake Nyos in Cameroon released a cloud of carbon dioxide that killed one thousand seven hundred forty-six people. Scientists later discovered the gas was still accumulating decades on, the Times of India reports. The lake sits atop a volcanic crater, where carbon dioxide from deep underground can build up in its waters and, if disturbed, erupt to the surface all at once.
