Researchers recycle rice husks into a wonder material that removes toxic dyes from water

Industrial dyes from textile, leather, and paper manufacturing are a persistent source of water pollution — many are toxic, some carcinogenic — and they linger in aquatic environments for years. Researchers at Florida International University now have a solution: they've converted discarded rice husks into a sponge-like filter that removes these pollutants. Rice production worldwide generates over five hundred forty million tonnes annually, with roughly one hundred thirty-six million tonnes of husks typically discarded as waste. The team heated the husks in low-oxygen conditions to create biochar, then combined it with layered double hydroxides, clay-like minerals that enhance the filter's ability to trap contaminants. When tested on brilliant green and malachite green dyes — two commonly used industrial pigments — the material proved effective and reusable for at least five cycles, according to Anthropocene Magazine. The researchers plan to test the filter on additional dyes, heavy metals, and water samples from real-world sources.
