AfCFTA signs $3.1B deal to deploy new customs system

The African Continental Free Trade Area is investing three point one billion dollars in new customs infrastructure through a partnership with Bergmans Security Consultants, a Nigerian company, per Semafor. The AfCFTA — the world's largest free-trade area — began trading in twenty twenty-one; intra-Africa trade has grown substantially since, rising twelve point five percent from twenty twenty-three to two hundred twenty billion dollars in twenty twenty-four. Yet analysts note that the pact's current impact is constrained by structural and operational challenges. Secretary-General Wamkele Mene announced the deal last week, saying the system will allow customs agencies across member states to work together seamlessly.
