How Mailchimp Went From $1B+ ARR to … Shrinking Inside Intuit. A Death Spiral in the Age of AI?

saas

Mailchimp's decline inside Intuit has become so stark that the company publishes earnings two ways: once counting the email platform, once without. Per SaaStr, on Intuit's May earnings call, Global Business Solutions showed fifteen percent growth including Mailchimp, seventeen percent excluding it. Intuit paid approximately twelve billion dollars for Mailchimp in twenty twenty-one, when it was doing eight hundred million in revenue with strong double-digit growth. Five years later, Mailchimp is shrinking. The company confirmed year-over-year revenue decline and announced a seventeen percent workforce reduction—roughly thirty-one hundred roles—with restructuring charges near three hundred million dollars. Klaviyo, building for the same small-business segment, grew twenty-eight percent last quarter with one hundred ten percent net revenue retention. The mismatch traces to strategy: Mailchimp won by doing one thing perfectly, email. Then it bloated into an all-in-one platform, websites and landing pages and CRM and SMS and appointment tools, each addition making the core job incrementally harder. The AI shift added a second blow—new email customers now work through APIs and developer integrations, not a marketer's UI. Mailchimp is losing the businesses it has and unseen where the next ones are created.
