Poland protests a summer of violence against Ukrainians

world

Demonstrators turned out in twenty-two Polish cities on Sunday, August ninth, to protest a summer surge in violence against Ukrainians living in Poland. Meduza reports the rallies were organized by the civic group Committee for the Defense of Democracy, following a string of attacks — including a Wroclaw couple beaten over their accent and an assault on a Ukrainian man in Poznan whose defender was also attacked. Organizers delivered a petition with more than eleven thousand signatures to Poland's Interior Ministry demanding a crackdown, as Meduza tells it. The protests come as a recent poll found more Poles now oppose than support accepting refugees from Ukraine.
