Building a bicycle dropper seat post

Per Hackaday, one maker set out to build a custom dropper seat post—the handlebar-controlled seat mechanism you find on modern mountain bikes. Drawing inspiration from woodworking clamps, the design used angled plates to lock and release seat height, powered by cable and air spring. To avoid machining from scratch, the maker reused parts from a broken commercial post. In real-world testing, the mechanism encountered cable friction and press-fit failures, and ultimately couldn't reliably hold a rider's weight—a telling reminder of the mechanical complexity hiding inside components most cyclists take for granted.
