What Is a Climate Diet?

other

Per Nonprofit Quarterly, social media sustainability influencers are pushing a narrow vision of what climate-conscious eating means—swapping cow's milk for oat milk, fish for plant-based alternatives—but this messaging often excludes the very communities with the deepest food traditions. For Indigenous and Black communities, sustainability has always been woven into cultural food practices, yet when dominant culture adopts these same foods, prices skyrocket and access disappears. Academic researchers and food justice advocates say the problem runs deeper: for many Americans, especially in rural and Indigenous communities, these "sustainable" choices aren't choices at all. Many tribal areas are food deserts with no adequate grocery store for miles. Add in decades of westernized diet policies, and Native communities now face extraordinarily high rates of diet-related diseases. Food sovereignty—having control over production, distribution, and access to traditional foods—offers a more inclusive framework than sustainability alone, one that centers social justice alongside environmental impact.
