Less than four percent of US safety funding went to Muslim institutions: Report

A new report from the Muslim Public Affairs Council finds a stark disparity in federal security funding for religious institutions. Less than four percent of the Department of Homeland Security's Nonprofit Security Grant Program went to Muslim organizations over the past decade, while nearly sixty percent went to Jewish groups and just over twenty-five percent to Christian groups. Since its creation after the September eleventh attacks, the NSGP has distributed eight hundred fifty million dollars in grants for security improvements like cameras, bulletproof glass, and security training. Researchers note the gap isn't simply about demand. The current administration has added eligibility restrictions—around diversity initiatives and opposition to boycotts of Israel—that make it harder for Muslim and immigrant organizations to apply. Jewish nonprofits have had more institutional experience navigating the grant process. The disparity reflects what MPAC has documented as a fifteen-month high in anti-Muslim sentiment under the Trump administration.
