Why do certain lyrics touch us so deeply? We studied 35 years of hits to find out

Researchers at the University of Melbourne have spent thirty-five years analyzing what makes certain song lyrics emotionally powerful. Per the Conversation, they studied the top ten songs from the Australian charts between nineteen eighty-eight and twenty twenty-three—covering three hundred sixty unique tracks—and used psychological theory combined with a custom AI tool to find patterns. What they discovered: seventy-three percent of these chart-toppers contain themes of human connection, with songs like Dua Lipa's "Levitating" and John Legend's "All of Me" as prime examples. But here's the striking part: songs where emotional needs are satisfied appear twice as often as songs where they're frustrated. So it's not the heartbreak that resonates—it's the feeling of being understood, capable, or in control. The researchers suggest these insights could eventually inform music-based mental health applications designed to support emotional wellbeing.
