Major earthquake claims 111 lives in Colombia

A magnitude seven point four earthquake struck western Colombia early Monday, killing at least one hundred eleven people and injuring eighty-seven more, Dawn reports. The quake, centered in the coastal Choco region, toppled buildings across Pereira, Manizales, Cali and Quibdo, with dozens still missing beneath the rubble. President Abelardo de la Espriella, sworn in just three days earlier, declared a state of emergency as rescue efforts got underway. The disaster follows two devastating earthquakes that hit Venezuela in June, which killed more than six thousand people across the region.
