14 illegal miners dead, scores injured at disused South Africa mine, police say

South African police say fourteen illegal miners have died and scores more were injured at a disused mine near Rustenburg, in the North West province. The Straits Times reports the incident occurred at the abandoned site on Tuesday. Illegal mining at disused sites remains a persistent hazard in South Africa, where unstable, unmonitored shafts have led to fatal collapses before.
