Ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad sentenced to death in absentia
world
A Syrian court has sentenced ousted president Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia on war crimes and crimes against humanity charges tied to the country's civil war, Dawn reports. Assad fled to Moscow in December twenty twenty-four as rebel forces closed in on Damascus, and this ruling marks the first such verdict from the transitional authorities now trying former regime figures both in person and in absentia. The same court also sentenced former security official Atif Najib, a cousin of Assad, to death on related crimes against humanity charges.
