Deepfake hiccup unmasks suspected digital certificate fraudster

Spain's national police have arrested a cybercriminal suspected of using deepfake technology and forged documents to impersonate others and obtain digital certificates, according to The Register. The man made 38 attempts to pose as 30 different people, succeeding on multiple occasions. He used face-altering software, altered photographs, and custom-built lighting to recreate security holograms during verification. In Spain and other EU countries, digital certificates allow users to sign contracts, authorize transactions, and handle administrative procedures online—making fraudulently obtained credentials a powerful tool for identity theft and further crimes. His operation unraveled when deepfake software experienced a momentary processing delay during a video check, exposing his real face for barely a second. Police tracked him down, discovering encrypted devices and over three hundred phone lines registered under stolen identities.
