Astrolight, ATMOS Partner on Laser Comms Reentry Demo

ATMOS Space Cargo and Lithuanian optical comms maker Astrolight have announced a partnership, Payload Space reports, to fly a laser communications terminal on an ATMOS reentry vehicle during a two thousand twenty-seven demo mission. The goal is to maintain high-speed data connectivity during atmospheric reentry, when traditional radio frequencies can degrade. The Astrolight ATLAS-X terminal will enable two point five gigabits per second of continuous connectivity, giving operators real-time insights into vehicle health, trajectory, and payload performance as the spacecraft plummets through the atmosphere. The partnership reflects a growing trend—as reentry missions become more autonomous and data-intensive, especially for companies building manufacturing capabilities in orbit and defense agencies testing hypersonic components, the need for reliable real-time data has become critical. The move follows a lesson from ATMOS' April twenty twenty-five demo mission, where insufficient radio data prevented Frontier Space from fully validating its SpaceLab platform, forcing the company to fly a second demonstration on a competitor's vehicle.
