Taiwan beefs up civil, military defense in drills

world

Taiwan is conducting its largest-ever annual military preparedness drills running through August fourteenth, emphasizing civil defense and whole-of-society readiness. Per Semafor, the exercises include new elements inspired by Ukraine: simulating production dispersal, throttling mobile networks to show what internet outages mean, and accelerating drone and unmanned-boat deployment in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan is also considering a sixteen percent defense spending increase, though an expert in The Diplomat argues that civil defense is the conflict vector most likely to define a cross-strait crisis.
