Turning a Toy Game Boy into a Real Game Boy
tech
A hobbyist modder transformed a Fisher Price Laugh and Learn toy that closely resembles a Game Boy into a fully functional Game Boy. The project started with a Game Boy Color whose screen had failed; the modder extracted its mainboard and grafted it into the toy's shell. To preserve the toy's distinctive character, they integrated the original buttons and sliding blocks, and creatively added the missing Select and Start buttons. An early mishap blew a fuse when power fed backward into the circuitry, but after stripping non-essential components, the modder installed a new OLED screen that suits the chunky aesthetic. Per Hackaday, the result is both playable and remarkably faithful to its toy origins.
