Under-the-radar creeks could be sweeping carbon out of salt marshes

Salt marshes have long been regarded as carbon sinks—coastal wetlands that trap greenhouse gases in their soils. But Phys.org reports that researchers monitoring tidal creeks in Louisiana found evidence suggesting those creeks may actually be sweeping carbon out of the marsh and back into the environment, challenging the assumption that these ecosystems reliably sequester carbon.
