The bleak picture of how Indigenous youth are treated in Australia’s justice system

Indigenous children in Australia are being detained at record rates, according to Global Voices, which cites a government Productivity Commission report showing First Nations youth custody has held flat despite a target to cut it thirty percent by twenty thirty-one. The same data shows these children spend an average of fifty seven point two days in detention without even being sentenced, rising past ninety three days in Queensland. Legal advocates and the UN's Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination have both called the pattern a sign of systemic racial discrimination, Global Voices reports. More than two hundred organizations have now written to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urging an emergency summit on youth justice.
