Usually, hunting for dark matter means constructing enormous instruments deep underground. But researchers in Japan found a cleverer approach. They recognized that Earth's magnetic field and the natural cavity between ground and ionosphere create a resonating system, oscillating at roughly eight cycles per second. Dark matter, according to some theoretical models, might produce a faint signal detectable in that cavity. Rather than build new equipment, the team analyzed ten years of geomagnetic readings already collected at a Scottish observatory in Dumfriesshire. Universe Today reports this approach repurposes existing data to probe one of physics' biggest mysteries.
