While soursob's yellow blooms brighten Australian winters, the weed from Africa is notoriously difficult to eradicate. Per The Conversation, soursob spreads primarily by bulbs and smaller bulbils rather than seeds—a quirk of its infertile varieties in Australia. Control requires patience and persistence: removing leaves before flowering when bulbs are weakened, repeated mowing, or planting over it to shade it out. Herbicides work on larger scales, and deep mulch helps significantly. While labor-intensive, The Conversation reports the approach does eventually work—sometimes taking years, but delivering a distinct sense of victory once that dense swathe is finally vanquished.
