A controversial Colorado education group was in danger of dissolving. A 2013 agreement just saved it.

A Colorado education cooperative avoided immediate dissolution thanks to a legal provision in a thirteen-year-old membership agreement. Education reEnvisioned Board of Cooperative Educational Services, or ERBOCES, was set to become ineligible to operate after Pikes Peak State College announced it would withdraw, leaving only one member. State law requires at least two members. But per Chalkbeat, a 2013 agreement obligates any withdrawing member to provide a full year's notice—a requirement Pikes Peak's president says he intends to honor. This gives ERBOCES at least ten months to recruit new members, though the organization faces mounting skepticism from state officials. ERBOCES has drawn controversy for authorizing a now-defunct public Christian school and using state funding for homeschool enrichment programs including sports, horseback riding, and skiing. Colorado lawmakers have recently limited the co-op's ability to authorize new schools and programs.
