Rep. John Larson ouster makes 2026 a record year for Democratic primary losses

Connecticut Democrat John Larson lost his primary to former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, part of a broader generational shake-up within the Democratic Party this year. Larson, 78, is the seventh House Democrat unseated in a primary in twenty twenty-six—the most in any single election cycle this century. Axios reports Bronin, 47, outraised his incumbent opponent and gained support from the state Democratic Party as well as outside groups including VoteVets, an organization supporting Democratic military veterans. Larson had previously suffered a highly publicized freeze-up during a House floor speech, which he attributed to a seizure. Yet for all his progressive credentials, Larson's primary loss reflects Democrats' growing preference for younger leadership in safe-seat races.
