Senate panel questions need for climate change authority

Pakistan's Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change is questioning whether the country needs a separate Climate Change Authority. Per Dawn, committee chair Sherry Rehman says the Authority's work substantially duplicates the Ministry of Climate Change's responsibilities—and she pointed out the ministry's budget has dropped to two point four seven eight billion rupees from three and a half billion. Rehman directed the climate secretary to justify the Authority's institutional value, warning it should be abolished if it can't demonstrate distinct worth beyond what the ministry already does. The timing is particularly fraught as Pakistan faces accelerating glacial melt across its thirty thousand glaciers and weak enforcement of environmental regulations.
