After 30 years of cultural revival, the Siraya reclaim their Indigenous status in Taiwan

The Siraya, an Indigenous group from Taiwan's southwestern plains, have officially been recognized as the nation's 17th Indigenous people. On July 30, they became the first plains-region tribe to gain this status. The recognition caps a three-decade effort to revive their Sinckan language and culture, nearly erased by centuries of forced assimilation under colonial and military rule. The Talavan family has been central to the revival—founding a culture association in 1999 and, across three generations, recovering around four thousand Sinckan vocabulary words and creating educational materials and children's books in the language. Per Global Voices, Siraya activists frame the recognition not as creating division, but as restoring visibility to a history once hidden, ensuring a people long overlooked can finally be seen again.
