APOD: 2026 August 15 – Bright Perseids from Sweden

The Perseid Meteor Shower peaked on August 12th, creating a spectacular celestial display across Earth's northern skies. NASA Science reports that these annual summer meteors occur when dust particles from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle vaporize in our atmosphere. Near the Swedish coastal village of Grisslehamn, photographers captured especially bright meteors streaking across the night sky. The timing was ideal—a new moon meant no moonlight to diminish the show. And remarkably, this same August 12th night also brought a total solar eclipse, giving skywatchers an extraordinary double feature.
