Compress Links For Optimal QR Codes

tech

Hackaday reports on a new open-source project called Ha.mr, pronounced Hammer, that takes a different approach to shortening links. Instead of relying on a third-party database like traditional shorteners, it compresses the URL itself using open-source encoding and compression algorithms. The project also generates QR codes optimized for scanning by using the QR format's built-in alphanumeric character set, which reduces the data needed. Since it's open source, users can self-host it, though the creator built it on a lark and makes no promises it will stay online forever.
